A Calling to Lead and Inspire

The dean of All Saints’ Chapel and University chaplain is a pivotal and transformative role at the University of the South, entrusted with nurturing the spirit—the heart, mind, and place of the entire Sewanee community. More than a position, this calling demands a leader of deep faith in Jesus Christ who walks humbly and authentically among a vibrant and diverse academic community, fostering an environment of inclusion, inquiry, and welcome. With a genuine commitment to the pastoral care of students, faculty, staff, and the Sewanee community, the dean must embody the University's Episcopal identity while embracing and celebrating the growing religious, ethnic, and racial diversity of the campus. Driven by a passion for students and an ability to engage them in meaningful spiritual formation, this leader will inspire growth, exploration, and a deeper sense of faith within the Sewanee community.

Reporting to the vice-chancellor and president of the University and serving under the ecclesiastical authority of the chancellor, the University chaplain plays a vital role in fostering the spiritual and emotional well-being of the Sewanee community. As a spiritual leader, the chaplain, along with the larger chapel staff, provides pastoral care, organizes worship services, and oversees programs that reflect the University's Episcopal heritage while welcoming diverse faith traditions.

In keeping with the University’s new strategic plan, “Elevating Mind, Heart and Place,” which calls for reinforcing its legacy and identity with the Episcopal Church and elevating the University’s Episcopal role and influence, the title of dean of All Saints’ Chapel has been added to the traditional title of University chaplain. This will not be the first time in the University’s history that the chaplain has held the title of dean of the Chapel, but doing so today signals an opportunity for the University and All Saints’ Chapel to elevate its profile, enhance its programs, and play an even more important role in the church and in addressing the opportunities and needs within society.
