University Apartments Project
In 2022, Sewanee Village Ventures was given approval by the Investment Management Committee of the Board of Regents to purchase a vacant leasehold at the intersection of Alabama Ave. and Hwy. 41A with the goal of constructing employee apartments. It has become increasingly common for University employees to live outside of Sewanee, in some cases up to 50 miles away. With increasing housing prices in the Sewanee area and low availability, this initiative is intended to provide additional living options for faculty and staff.
The primary goals of this project are to:
- Satisfy unmet demand for apartments by faculty and staff,
- Provide a housing option for those not seeking a single-family home, and
- Provide a different rental option for those seeking to be closer to campus.
The leasehold is approximately 6.4 acres in size and the project contemplates construction of as many as six individual buildings, each with a mix of 2 studio apartments, 4 one-bedroom apartments and 2 two-bedroom apartments. The project also incorporates construction of a portion of the Heritage Trail extending it from the St. Mark’s Community Center to the sidewalk on Hwy. 41A.
This project is being led by Ramston Capital of Nashville, in collaboration with Barge Civil Engineering, Baker Barrios Design, and Batten Shaw Construction. The project is expected to begin in late 2023 with an expected completion date in early 2025.
