Certainly one who utilized every opportunity, McCourry Gortney, a pre-medical senior, found his calling through a Sewanee research internship at the Yale Child Study Center. Gortney says this experince "showed me that I want to do research in some capacity." The initiative and effort he placed into this opportunity lead to him being "offered the same position full-time after graduation" during his gap year(s).
To prospective students, follow your passions as "what sets those who are accepted [to medical school] apart from those who are not are the ones that can tell their story from an individual and reflective state," Gortney says. He encourages students to build a support system in which everyone inspires and pushes each other towards success.
