OUR CULTURE
We believe that anyone who has the desire and willingness to serve others in their goal to become a healthcare professional has the right to support and guidance on how to best prepare to be a competitive applicant to their professional school of choice. From the dedicated staff in the Office of Medical and Health Programs (OMHP), our accessible faculty, and amazing peer support, you will always be welcomed and encouraged to reach your goals.
ACADEMIC SUPPORT
The path of a pre-health student is rigorous and at times challenging. At Sewanee you have access to small classes that allow you to develop meaningful relationships with faculty who are invested in your success, and we have several mechanisms of tutoring support. Many departments offer tutoring for specific classes that are run by their majors, thus giving you a chance to engage with the material in a group setting with others in your class at specific times during the week. The OMHP also offers one-on-one tutoring for many of the foundational pre-health STEM courses. Students are matched with a faculty-recommended tutor; many tutors are also pre-health students who can offer individualized study skills support and mentorship on how to navigate being a pre-health student at Sewanee. Lastly, utilize your professor’s office hours. This is a chance to build a relationship with faculty and learn how to succeed in their course. All of these resources are fully funded and thus accessible to everyone.
CAREER SUPPORT
Discerning your pre-health path can be daunting, but our Office is here to guide you through the process. Many students arrive on campus set on a specific pre-health field, while others just know that they are interested in exploring this path to helping others. Regardless of where you are, we can help you navigate your way to being a successful applicant or finding your passion.
Every year we hold a Careers in Health and Medicine symposium where medical alumni from various fields come to meet with students. This is a great way to find mentorship and learn about what life is like in these careers. Our medical alumni are a strength that we cherish as Sewanee. Our alumni are very generous with their time and our students greatly benefit from their expertise and support.
There are several opportunities for specific pre-health disciplines that allow students to gain valuable insight. Pre-medical students have an opportunity to apply to the Hippocrates Fellows program, which is a honors program intended for pre-medical students who aspire to be leaders in medicine. There are also many opportunities for pre-med, pre-nursing, and pre-PA students to shadow healthcare professionals both during the semester and through the numerous funded summer internship experiences. Pre-dental students often shadow during the summer but can also find local dentists that enjoy having our students during the semester. Sewanee is also in a unique position to support pre-vet students with access to the University Farm, equestrian center, and local animal clinics. Students interested in Physical Therapy or Sports Medicine have the opportunity to intern with athletic trainers on campus and at the local hospital.
