Every year, Sewanee pre-health students travel abroad to learn from physicians and patients alike. From class discussions at Sewanee to shadowing doctors internationally, students gain a greater awareness and understanding of different healthcare systems and cultures around the world.

About the Program

Course Credit

Through this three-week fellowship, students gain credit for a full 4-credit course as well as 40+ clinical shadowing hours. This opportunity is ideal for pre-medical and pre-health students looking to build their cultural competencies and learn more about healthcare systems globally. Sewanee plans to offer this experience every year, alternating between a medical Spanish immersion program and programs with no language requirement.

Application Details

In the fall, students can attend an information session to learn about the study abroad program and hear from former participants. Applications are typically due at the beginning of the spring semester and, depending on the program, an interview may be required. Participants are notified of their acceptance at the beginning of February.

Dates for the information session and application links will be posted during November/December and can be found below, on our Brightspace Course, in your OMHP email, on the screens in Spencer Hall and on our social media platforms.

Scholarship/Funding

Scholarship applicants are awarded on the basis of both merit and need. The aim of this scholarship is to provide funds to pre-health students in need who will go on to become successful applicants to professional school. A GPA of 3.4 is required for pre-medical students to obtain a committee letter from Sewanee when applying to medical school. To that end, applicants should demonstrate that they either have a 3.4 GPA overall, had a 3.4 GPA last semester, or are on track to obtain that GPA. For example, perhaps your GPA is not there yet but you can submit your transcript and show an upward trend.

Recipients will serve as future ambassadors for our medical abroad programs and will be expected to contribute to the program in meaningful ways. All recipients will be asked to complete a reflection at the end of the program.

Scholarship applications are due at the beginning of the spring semester. Exact due dates and links to apply for the scholarship will be posted here, on our social media sites and sent out through the OMHP email.
