I grew up exploring the forests of Southern Appalachia and developed an early interest in forestry. I earned a B.S. in Forest Management from North Carolina State University, an M.S. in Forest Biometrics from the University of Georgia, and a Ph.D. in Forestry and Environmental Science from Yale University. Before entering academia, I worked in industrial forestry, gaining practical experience in forest operations and land management.

research

I study silviculture, forest mensuration, and the management of working forests. My research combines field measurements, forest inventory, biometrics, and remote sensing to understand how forest stands develop over time and how management influences productivity, structure, and timber value. Current work includes long-term forest dynamics on the Sewanee Domain, shortleaf pine silviculture on the Cumberland Plateau, and forest dynamics within the Mata Atlântica and Eucalyptus plantation landscapes of southern Bahia, Brazil.
