Terry Papillon is a professor of Classics and Rhetoric.
Papillon teaches ancient Greek, Latin, classical civilization, mythology, and rhetoric, and has extensive experience leading study abroad programs. His research specialty is Greek rhetoric, particularly the Greek rhetorician Isocrates. He is the author of two books and numerous articles and book chapters, and has been editor of the online Classics journal Electronic Antiquity. He is currently the International Secretary for Societas Isocratica, the International Isocrates Society.
Papillon served as the Academic Dean at Sewanee from 2014-2023. Formerly, he was assistant vice provost at Virginia Tech and the director of the University Honors Program (2008-2014), as well as professor of Classics (1992-2014). He has a B.A. in Classics from St. Olaf College and a Ph.D. in Classical Philology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He taught at the University of North Carolina, The University of Minnesota-Duluth, Marquette University and Virginia Tech before coming to Sewanee in 2014.
