Let's get down to details

Before we get one checked out to you, there are a few things I need to be clear on, so that you know what you'd be getting yourself into and have an opportunity to say, "no, thank you."

FIRST

These bikes are intended to be checked out for an entire semester. They've just been serviced at Woody's and should be in good working order. While they are with you, you'll be responsible for taking care of them. That includes keeping air in the tires, lubing chains, etc. The SOP provides free/affordable bicycle maintenance services and there are a number of free bicycle air pumps for use around campus. Woody's can help with more intensive repairs. You may, certainly, return your bike early.

SECOND

To be issued a bike you MUST 1) Have a HELMET, 2) Have a BIKE LOCK, and 3) Have a mandatory SKILLS conversation with me.  If you don’t know how to ride a bike, I will teach you. We’ll set up some times and do so confidentially.

If at the end of this email, you'd still like to borrow a bike, please look at my google calendar and send me an invitation when you can stop by my office with your helmet and bike lock. At that time we'll pick out a bike for you.

THIRD

Understand the fees structure:

Late Fee

$5 / day - up to 8 days

Replacement/Assumed Lost Fee

$600

Manual Charges

$75

$125

$250

Your bike is due back on Reading Day of this semester. If you need it through the rest of your finals - you MUST bring the bike with you and visit my office. At that time I will extend your loan to an agreed upon date so you don't get charged late fees.

IF, you don't check your bike back in with me on Reading Day, then you will be charged $5/day late fee for up to 8 days. After 8 days your bike will be assumed lost and you'll be charged for a new replacement bike.

IF, you don't bring your bike back or you've wrecked it beyond repair, then you will be charged $600 for a new bike for my lending library.

IF, you bring your bike back and it needs more than standard wear and tear maintenance at Woody's, then you will be charged at one of the above rates ($75, $125, or $250). Normal wear and tear often include tubes, tires, brake cables, derailleur adjustments, etc and I will cover those costs at the end of each semester.

whew!

Alrighty, that was a lot of capitalization and emphasis, but I want to be completely transparent with you about the costs and requirements and assumptions of this bike lending program. I'm so excited to have a small, but growing library of bicycles that I can check out to students and employees like you!
