Let's get down to details
Before you check out a bike there are a few things I need to be clear on.
This way you know what you are agreeing to and have an opportunity to say, 'no, thank you.'
FIRST
These bikes are intended to be checked out for an entire semester. They've just been serviced and should be in good working order. While they are with you, YOU are responsible for taking care of them. That includes keeping air in the tires, etc. The SOP provides free/affordable bicycle maintenance services and there are a number of free bicycle air pumps for use around campus. Woody's can help with more intensive repairs. You can also contact us with concerns - be prepared to bring your bike to the Sustain bike shop.
SECOND
To be issued a bike you MUST have a HELMET and a BIKE LOCK. A limited number can be borrowed from Sustain through the bike library.
If you don’t know how to ride a bike, I will teach you. We’ll set up some times and do so confidentially.
THIRD
Understand the fees structure:
Late Fee |
$5 / day - up to 8 days |
|
Replacement/Assumed Lost Fee |
$600 |
|
Repairs Charges, for example |
$75 |
|
$125 |
||
$250 |
Lastly
Your bike is due back on Reading Day each semester. If you need it through the rest of your finals - you MUST arrange for an extension with Sara McIntyre. I will extend your loan to an agreed upon date so you don't get charged late fees.
You MUST hand off your library bike to OESS personnel or leave it in the Sustain bike shop to turn it in. Please let us know of any repair issues at that time. DO NOT leave your bike locked or unlocked in a bike rack and send an email. You will be charged.
IF, you don't bring your bike back or you've wrecked it beyond repair, then you will be charged $400-600 for a new bike for the lending library.
Normal wear and tear usually includes tubes, tires, brake cables, derailleur adjustments, etc and I will cover those costs at the end of each semester.
IF, your bike needs more than standard wear and tear maintenance, then you will be charged for repairs. (ex. bent rims due to crashes/tangoing with cars).
whew!
That was a lot but I want to be completely transparent with you about the costs, requirements, and assumptions of this bike lending program. I'm so excited to have a small, but growing library of bicycles that I can check out to students and employees like you!
