Trail of Tears Association

The Trail of Tears Association (TOTA) was founded in 1993 with the goal of developing and understanding the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail, which commemorates the forced removal of Cherokee people from their homes in 1838 and 1839. Now, TOTA works with the National Park Service to protect, preserve, and promote awareness of the Trail of Tears and its legacy. The Tennessee Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association (TNTOTA), a chapter of TOTA, educates on the Trail of Tears in Tennessee through educational programs and meetings, informational tables, commemorative walks, research, and installation of route signage.
