February 25, 2025
The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs has recognized Sewanee as one of the colleges and universities with the highest number of students selected for the Fulbright U.S. Student Program.
Last year, three Sewanee graduates accepted Fulbright U.S. Student Awards, which allowed them to pursue teaching and community engagement opportunities in Ireland, Mexico, and Peru. Since 1950, a total of 62 Sewanee alumni have received Fulbright awards.
“We’re very proud of the many recent Sewanee graduates who have received Fulbright U.S. Student Awards, and honored to be named a top-producing institution,” says University Provost Scott Wilson. “As noted in our recently adopted strategic plan, the University is committed to preparing students to be servant-leaders who fulfill the responsibilities of global citizenship. The Fulbright program offers students an unparalleled opportunity to broaden their perspectives and deepen their knowledge while pursuing teaching or research in another country. The person-to-person exchanges that Fulbright encourages play an important role in fostering mutual understanding and positive relations among participating countries.”
The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is administered at the University of the South by Associate Dean Alexander M. Bruce. A listing of previous Fulbright awards and other fellowships and scholarships won by Sewanee graduates is available via the Office of the Dean of the College.
Fulbright is a program of the U.S. Department of State, with funding provided by the U.S. government. Participating governments and host institutions, corporations, and foundations around the world also provide direct and indirect support to the program.
Fulbright alumni have included 44 heads of state or government, 62 Nobel laureates, 90 Pulitzer Prize winners, 82 MacArthur Fellows, and countless leaders and changemakers who build relationships between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.
