Sewanee Alumnus Dr. Joseph B. DeLozier III Inducted into TICUA Hall of Fame
The University of the South is proud to announce that distinguished alumnus Dr. Joseph B. DeLozier III, C’77,
has been inducted into the Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Association (TICUA) Hall of Fame Class of 2026. DeLozier joins an esteemed group of 25 honorees recognized across Tennessee’s 34 private, nonprofit institutions for their extraordinary leadership and service.
“At its best, higher education is about transformation, purpose, and cultivating a life of meaningful impact,” says TICUA President Dr. Cameron Conn. “This year’s honorees reflect the character, purpose, and leadership that Tennessee’s private, nonprofit colleges and universities strive to cultivate in every student.” DeLozier earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Sewanee in 1977 before attending the University of Tennessee, Memphis, where he earned an M.D. in 1982. He completed residencies in general surgery and plastic surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in craniofacial surgery at the University of Pennsylvania.
A board-certified plastic surgeon since 1990 and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (F.A.C.S.), DeLozier has built a distinguished career in Nashville. He has served as chief of plastic surgery at Saint Thomas Midtown Hospital and as an assistant clinical professor at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He is an active member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the Plastic Surgery Research Council, and the International Society of Craniofacial Surgery. He has also helped shape future generations of healthcare leaders through his service on the University of Tennessee Health Science Center Medical School Admissions Board. Two years ago, his oldest daughter, Dr. Meg Ferguson, joined him in his Nashville practice.
Beyond his private practice, DeLozier has devoted significant time to philanthropic medical care. He has performed pro bono reconstructive surgeries for children in need and served on multiple international missions with Operation Smile, providing free, life-changing cleft surgeries and comprehensive care across the globe.
DeLozier’s deep commitment to his alma mater has spanned nearly five decades. For more than 30 years, he has personally sponsored medical internships for Sewanee undergraduates, providing aspiring physicians with invaluable clinical experience and mentorship. His leadership at Sewanee includes serving as chair of the Board of Regents, as well as holding key roles on the Greek Alumni Council, Capital Campaign Cabinet, and Development Council. A mentor to generations of students, he has served as an advisor to the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, contributed to campus enhancement as a member of the Sewanee Golf Course Renovation Advisory Committee, and previously served as an officer of the Sewanee Club of Nashville.
In addition to his civic and professional impact, DeLozier is an active member of St. George’s Episcopal Church in Nashville, where he has served as stewardship chair and vestry member. In 1995, he established the Kanuga Trailblazers Program to expand outdoor youth ministry and leadership.
DeLozier resides in Nashville with his wife, Dr. Jan Stallings DeLozier. They are the proud parents of three adult children and have four grandchildren. To learn more about the 2026 inductees, visit the TICUA Hall of Fame website or explore the digital 2026 Hall of Fame publication.
