Career Readiness + Student Success Names Faculty Fellows for Advising and Mentoring
September 17, 2024
Career Readiness + Student Success has named the first recipients of a new faculty fellowship. The faculty fellows for advising and mentoring are (pictured, from left): Associate Professor of Art Jessica Wohl; Associate Professor of Biology Chris Shelley; Associate Professor of Computer Science Ross Sowell; and Associate Professor of Economics Katherine Theyson.
The new fellows will partner with Career Readiness + Student Success for a three-year term, during which they will develop resources to support faculty advisors in their work with students. The program’s goals include articulating a shared philosophy of advising, designing a four-year advising structure for use by all faculty advisors, and enhancing advisors’ preparation to support students’ vocational exploration.
As the work of the fellows comes to fruition, faculty should find themselves equipped with more tools to integrate advising and mentorship best practices into both the classroom and co-curricular learning experiences. With reflection on meaning and purpose embedded in the academic experience, students can expect to clarify their values, interests, and transferable skills as they navigate the path from curriculum to career.
“We often hear from graduates that the mentoring and advising relationships that they had with faculty were both impactful and transformative,” says Brooke Harrington, assistant dean for integrated advising and student support. “We’re excited to partner with College faculty to continue to strengthen their crucial support for students on their curricular and career journeys.”
