Charles Lloyd, world-renown jazz saxophonist and flutist and a Memphis native, began his career playing with some of the greatest jazz leaders, including Ornette Coleman and Cannonball Adderly, but possesses multifaceted abilities and has worked with musicians as diverse as Howlin’ Wolf and the Beach Boys.

Charles Lloyd, world-renown jazz saxophonist and flutist, plays Sewanee on Thursday night, April 21, in Guerry Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. in the company of Bill Frisell, guitar, and Gerald Clayton, piano. Lloyd, a Memphis native, began his career playing with some of the greatest jazz leaders, including Ornette Coleman and Cannonball Adderly, but possesses multifaceted abilities and has worked with musicians as diverse as Howlin’ Wolf and the Beach Boys.

Bill Frisell, a superb guitarist who began recording in the 80's, has addressed many different American styles (jazz, bluegrass, classical, etc.). His pandemic interpretation of “We Shall Overcome” at the Village Vanguard (April, 2021) was captured live by Blue Note, posted to YouTube, and has been viewed thousands of times. Gerald Clayton, a young jazz pianist out of the Netherlands and Los Angeles, is in high demand as a solo artist, accompanist, and as a member of the Clayton Brothers ensemble. He's been nominated for half a dozen Grammy's.

Lloyd’s performance at Sewanee is something of a homecoming, as he played here twice back in the ’60s. In 1964 this was in support of Adderly’s sextet, and in 1967 he was frontman to the future star pianist Keith Jarrett.
