The Office of Inclusive Excellence strives to create an environment where students from underrepresented populations feel that they matter and belong to Sewanee: The University fo the South.
The purpose of the Office of Inclusive Excellence is to support students through advocating for equitable access of resources, celebrating their identities and heritage, providing cross-cultural connections, and educating the campus community on matters of student diversity.
The Office of Inclusive Excellence exists to advance equity, intercultural understanding, and inclusion at the University of the South. The office’s programs and services support and enhance the academic, social and overall sense of community for our students. We seek to foster belonging and create developmental opportunities for underrepresented populations within our campus community. This is done through providing students with intellectual and social spaces that advance community efforts to positively shift cultural dynamics and proactively mitigate exclusion on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, ability, socioeconomic status, citizenship, and other identities.
The OIE will support efforts related to equity for underrepresented minority groups. In order for students to feel a sense of belonging it is important to ensure that systemic barriers of success are dismantled.
Bringing individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds, and identity groups together in an effort to build a deeper sense of community and belonging. We seek to provide programs that leverage bridging and bonding across differences and similarities in support of an inclusive educational environment.
Observing and honoring culture and tradition across various cultures, backgrounds, identities and heritages. Students from underrepresented backgrounds are to be increasingly represented through celebratory experiences related to who they are.
The OIE will facilitate training and developmental opportunities to increase cross-cultural understanding and humility. This includes educating student leaders who can provide inclusive community engagement support for their peers.
