Planning Your Retirement

Use this checklist when you are actively preparing for retirement and want to review benefit-related decisions and next steps.

What to do first

Begin planning early and review your retirement timing, retirement savings, and any related health or benefit questions.

Checklist

Start planning early and think through both your retirement timing and your benefit transition timing.
Review your retirement plan, current contributions, beneficiary designations, and any distribution or transition questions you may have.
Use the retirement resources available on Sewanee’s site and through your retirement vendors to help map out next steps.
Contact the appropriate retirement vendor, advisor, or provider if you need help with retirement account decisions or timing.
Review whether you may qualify as a qualified University retiree under the handbook and ask HR what additional benefits may apply.
Review Emeriti Retirement Health Savings information and consider how it may fit into your retirement health planning.
Consider how medical and other benefits may change as you prepare to retire, especially if Medicare timing may also be part of your planning.
Review and update beneficiaries if needed.
Gather your questions and confirm any final actions, deadlines, and timing with HR before your retirement date.
