HAZING PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT
Our work is grounded in the University’s purpose of enabling students to live with grace, integrity, and a reverent concern for the world.
Membership within recognized organizations—including student groups, Greek Life, and athletic teams—provides positive opportunities to build community and belonging, encourage flourishing, and enhance the quality of students’ lives. Participation should include a culture of respect for each student’s well-being and dignity.
At its core, hazing is an abuse of power that interferes with community members' ability to thrive as leaders and learners. The impact of hazing creates a campus climate at odds with our shared values of inquiry, community, flourishing, and courage. The University upholds the following philosophy specifically related to the prevention of hazing:
- The University is unequivocally opposed to all acts of hazing and acknowledges the intersection of hazing and other forms of power-based violence.
-
Our approach is informed by research and data, including prevention science and the Hazing Prevention Framework (Allen et al., 2018).
-
We work to address the underlying causes of hazing and not simply the observable behaviors. As such, Sewanee utilizes a comprehensive approach that reinforces our commitment to inclusion and student success.
-
Through tailored education, training, awareness, and transparency, we provide resources to encourage informed decision-making, positive community-building, and a culture that is inhospitable to hazing.
