The Carlos Gallery in the Visual Art Building at the University of the South is pleased to present This Silence Echoes, a solo exhibition by artist Abigail Rose Hedley.
Hedley is a Midwestern sculptor who reimagines the familiar in wool. By working in the slow, engaged, and tactile process of needle felting, their sculptural works are intimately familiar yet detached from this reality. Informed by storytelling and distorted recollection, objects and forms that are subconsciously attached to memories become outlets to re-examine personal histories, generational folklore, and perceptions of society.
In This Silence Echoes, through the exhaustive processing of wool, the relationship between what is real and what is imagined becomes intertwined, melding into something unforeseen. Belonging equally to the physical world and an internalized speculative terrain, viewers are invited to sit comfortably with what is already known, while simultaneously collecting fleeting ideas of what could be.
Abigail Rose Hedley is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor of Sculpture at the University of the South. In addition to their gallery work, Hedley’s work has been featured in Sculpture Magazine and Fiber Arts Now. Hedley also has an extensive background in public art, working as a fabricator, conservator, and consultant in the Midwest. Hedley received their Bachelors of Fine Arts from the University of Northern Iowa and their Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Tennessee Knoxville.
