Exhibition:
Cathy Cone, Versions and Translations, October 23 – December 6, 2024
Artist Talk and Reception: November 14, 2024 @ 5:00pm

The Carlos Gallery in the Visual Art Building at the University of the South is pleased to present Versions and Translations, an exhibition by artist Cathy Cone.

Cathy Cone discovers images in the world and explores how they emerge and appear as rather strange, unexpected surprises. Speaking the languages of photography, printmaking and collage, she takes this charge into her studio as “something” found to translate.

Fueled by a desire to connect and have her hand more present in the work, Cone responds to images more directly in order to activate rediscovery through a new conscious intention. The finding and constructing of what she understands and knows, then links up with what she does not know or cannot see. These findings then meld into a new image that lives on the threshold.

About her work, Cone states, "In the moment where images transform and upgrade my consciousness, photography is a guide for me to a deeper understanding on the other side of the transformations."

Versions and Translations is a collection of working and artist proofs that are not about one series but more about things in a relationship. Cone’s practice of making and developing the printed image is activated by the materiality. She’s interested in the intersections, combinations, and states of inked matrixes and forms. Cone wonders about the "how" of transformation through the exploration of plate, digital file, negative or printing method towards a new situation.

Cathy Cone is a photographer, painter and printmaker. Her surrealist approach to photography began in the late 1970’s with the introduction of the "Diana" camera. This led to investigation of experimental techniques towards a multidisciplinary approach to her poetic image making. Cathy received her training at Ohio University, Vermont Studio Center. She received her MFA at the Maine Media College. Some of her exhibitions include Weisman Art Museum, University of Alabama, DeCordova Museum, Griffin Museum of Photography, Brattleboro Museum and Art Center and the Vermont Center for Photography. Her works are in the collection of IBM, Hallmark Fine Art Collections, American Express, Beekman a Thompson Hotel, New York and many private collections. Cathy with her husband, master printer Jon Cone, founded Cone Editions Press in 1980 in Port Chester, NY as a collaborative printmaking workshop. Cone Editions Press is now located in East Topsham, Vermont where Cathy is director of the Workshops and Studio.
