Through their participation in the Bonner and Canale program, students received training to engage in and lead capacity building projects while applying this knowledge through shared work with local community partners. Their work this year led them to design programming, organize events, develop marketing materials and social media campaigns, manage volunteers, lead workshops and classes, and write grants.

Now, prepared with a Sewanee education gained from both inside and outside of the classroom, these student leaders are able to consider the conventional and unconventional ways their gifts can be used for the public good.  For some, this means teaching or being trained to teach, being trained in medicine, and supporting environmental efforts. All students know, though, that service takes many forms and can be enacted in small (e.g. daily) and grand (e.g. vocationally) ways.

Sewanee, and the Bonner/Canale program, gave them the space and opportunities to grow their awareness and confidence as civically-oriented citizens, to find congruence with their values and their work, and to see the power of collective action.  We have great confidence in them, in the impact they will have on the world, and in the ways they will continue to grow.  We wish them the best of luck going forward!
