Counseling and Psychological Services graduate Level Training Program

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is pleased to provide an opportunity to assist with the education of future professionals in the field of counseling psychology and social work. CAPS provides a one to two semester academic year internship as a field of placement in coordination with several local graduate level training programs. CAPS provides an excellent opportunity for interns and practicum students to learn a variety of clinical skills, provide outreach to the University community and to develop other professional skills at a liberal arts institute of higher education.

About the Internship

Students enrolled in graduate programs for social work, mental health counseling, and marriage and family therapy are invited to apply for a CAPS graduate level internship. Trainee schedules depend on each specific program's requirements. Interns participate in weekly professional development, including case consultation and clinical supervision.

In Their Own Words

Previous Sewanee interns' experience in their own words:

"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as a Counselor-in-Training at CAPS. The staff is so supportive; the culture of CAPS has made me feel safe and welcome to consult, ask questions, process, and seek help when I need. On top of all that, they bring a wide array of clinical skills and perspective that is strengthening my own skill set in the profession. Getting to fulfill my internship requirements at a place like CAPS, at Sewanee, has also provided numerous opportunities to collaborate with other departments on campus, deepening my understanding of the needs of college students in today's environment. As a Counselor-in-Training at CAPS I get to work with a wide array of clients, I am learning a lot, and am being supported every step of the way."

"My experience as an intern at Sewanee CAPS was incredible. The CAPS team fosters such an energizing and welcoming environment, and I was able to cultivate my professional identity beyond my wildest expectations. I was so grateful to work with not only a diverse population of clients, but also to collaborate with other campus organizations and professionals. My internship experience really helped me feel confident in my skills and prepared for post-grad work."
