Become a Summer Associate VISTA in 2022!

Summer Associates serve the plateau community in a variety of functions—from food distribution to farm and trail work, to literacy programming for children.

This full-time volunteer opportunity pays a bi-weekly stipend of $513.00 and an education allowance of $1,311.00 upon completion of service. The eight-week Summer Associate VISTA program will operate from June 6 through July 31, 2022. Anyone eighteen and over is welcome to apply. We are now accepting applications.

Safety is our top priority and we’ve re-structured VISTA service in order to operate safely in the face of the global pandemic.

Summer Associate VISTAs serve to alleviate poverty by building capacity and directly supporting communities with hands-on work. Our program places a clear focus on alleviating hunger and learning loss for children by operating the large-volume South Cumberland Meal Program. Supporting this program Summer Associates deliver and distribute meals to children at approximately 15 sites in Franklin, Marion, and Grundy Counties.

When not distributing meals, Summer Associate VISTAs serve at locations scattered across the plateau region. In recent years these have included the Cumberland State Park, the DuBose Conference Center, Camp Rain, Rain Teen Center, Morton Memorial Food Bank, Dependable Laundry, Sequatchie Valley Head Start, the University Farm, and the Office of Civic Engagement at the University of the South. Depending on their assignments, Summer Associates may also design educational activities, create programming materials, assist with research, engage in community outreach and education, as well as perform hands-on activities such as gardening and grounds maintenance for our community partners.
