The Carlos Gallery in the Visual Art Building at the University of the South is pleased to host Visiting Assistant Professor of Sculpture Abigail Rose Hedley as they discuss their solo exhibition This Silence Echoes. Hedley is a Midwestern sculptor who reimagines the familiar in wool. By working in the slow, engaged, and tactile process of needle felting, their sculptural works are intimately familiar yet detached from this reality. Informed by storytelling and distorted recollection, objects and forms that are subconsciously attached to memories become outlets to re-examine personal histories, generational folklore, and perceptions of society. In "This Silence Echoes", through the exhaustive processing of wool, the relationship between what is real and what is imagined becomes intertwined, melding into something unforeseen. Belonging equally to the physical world and an internalized speculative terrain, viewers are invited to sit comfortably with what is already known, while simultaneously collecting fleeting ideas of what could be.
