This collection of work by Qiyu (George) Meng and Maria Mattingly is an exploration of experience and emotional attachment united by time and place. Through photography, Meng and Mattingly aim to offer a perspective of Sewanee that oscillates between intimate details and a broader grasp of what it can mean to live in a time marked by fear and uncertainty. This collection of work is defined by the simultaneous fragility and permanence of joy and how relationships between people, places, and spaces are interwoven into a community.

Maria Mattingly, from Cookeville, Tennessee, is a senior at Sewanee: the University of the South majoring in Art  with a concentration in Photography. Through portraiture, Mattingly examines human connections and relationships and explores themes and motifs such as the loss of childhood innocence, the experience of being a woman, empty space, darkness, and introspection. Mattingly primarily works with medium and large format film-based cameras and prefers working with hand-sensitized photographic materials. Mattingly has been awarded Sewanee’s Shepard Award for Excellence in Photography and the Peter V. Guarisco Merit Scholarship in Art.
