At the bottom of this page, you will find courses offered in the upcoming term that do not have prerequisites (that is, there are no Sewanee courses that you must complete before taking these courses) and have available seats for first-year students. There are, however, a few things to note:

  • Courses marked with the "(AP/IB)" attribute may be taken by those first-year students who have earned either a 4 or 5 on the AP exam or a 5, 6, or 7 on the IB exam. You are encouraged to select these courses if you have taken the germane AP/IB exams (described on the Registrar’s page) and you have received an official score report.
  • Courses marked with the “(*)” attribute are advanced courses that require special placement by the academic department or program.
  • In the "Foreign Language" category you'll find a link to all our language programs. The courses listed, however, are for the benefit of those students who placed into the highest level of a foreign language at Sewanee and are given more than one advanced language course from which to choose. If you placed into a 100- or 200-level language course, do not include the course in your list of six courses but indicate your choice in the Foreign Language Placement section.
  • If you would like to take Calculus this fall, on your Course Selection Form, you will simply indicate "Calculus" (MATH 101, 102, 207). The faculty in Mathematics will place you in the appropriate level and course, whether MATH 101, MATH 102, or MATH 207.
  • If you would like to take Chemistry this fall, on your Course Selection Form, you will simply indicate "CHEM 119/150." The faculty in Chemistry will place you in the appropriate level and course, whether CHEM 119 or 150—or potentially CHEM 120, which is taught only in the spring semester (so you will register for it in November).
Completing the Course Selection Form
  • Make sure that you select six distinct courses on your Course Selection Form, and that no course appears more than once. Submitting a form with repeated courses will cause a delay in building your schedule.
  • Have a look at the disciplines listed in all categories. Note that some subjects or courses—particularly interdisciplinary ones—will appear in more than one category. (A course may be listed in both Humanities and in Social Sciences, for example.) You'll want to diversify your courses!
  • Make sure to complete the entire form; the more information you provide about your interests and concerns, the more informed the Guides will be when building your schedule.
  • See here for additional tips on the course selection process.
