The letter below were sent on March 11 to the Sewanee community from the Chair of the Board of Regents Reid Funston and Chancellor Skirving

March 11, 2022

Dear Sewanee Community,

As Chair of the Board of Regents and Chancellor of the University, we write to provide you with an update on the search for the University’s 18th Vice-Chancellor and President. During the process, updates will be sent to the Sewanee community first from the Board of Regents and then from the Vice-Chancellor Search Committee.

At the Board of Regents meeting in February, the Board formed three subcommittees to help manage the search process as well as to support Acting Vice-Chancellor Nancy Berner and her team during this period of transition:

  1. A subcommittee will lead in planning the Vice-Chancellor search process, in coordination with the Chancellor. This work will include the selection of a search consultant, and the engagement of the wider University community and the Regents in the search process. The chair for this committee is Board of Regents member Pete Stringer, C’71.
  2. A subcommittee will help support Acting Vice-Chancellor Berner and her senior leadership team through the transition period from now until a new Vice-Chancellor takes office. The chair of this committee is Board of Regents member Rayid Ghani, C’99.
  3. A subcommittee will give attention to long-range planning and priorities, while preparing to help onboard the new Vice-Chancellor once that person has been identified and elected. The chair of this committee is Board of Regents member Jim Folds, C’86.

The chairs of all of the Board of Trustees committees—formally the “Agenda Committee”—have already met with the Chancellor twice and will continue to meet in order to provide counsel for the Chancellor and to ensure that the Board of Trustees remains engaged and informed, as appropriate, throughout the search process.

Here are the next steps in the process:

  • Chancellor Rob Skirving will announce the co-chairs of the Search Committee, one of whom will be a current Trustee and one of whom will be a current Regent. This announcement will likely be made by early April at the latest.
  • The subcommittee led by Pete Stringer will select a firm to serve as our search consultant.
  • The Chancellor, working with the co-chairs and our search consultant, will identify and name the members of the Search Committee.
  • The Search Committee and the search consultant, working with the Regents and others, will engage the wider Sewanee community to help build a profile of qualifications to use in searching for our next Vice-Chancellor.

We will communicate regularly about the process via email and on a soon-to-be-launched website dedicated to the search process. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please send them to

Thank you for your patience as this critical work continues.
