Will there be any tuition discount if students chose the remote option?

No. Tuition remains the same if a student is on campus or learning remotely. 

If a student lives on campus, but some classes are taught remotely, will tuition be reduced?

No. Tuition remains the same for all modes of instruction.

If a student starts the semester on campus and then leaves campus and continues their studies remotely, will they be reimbursed the balance of their room and board?

If a student chooses to leave campus without being asked to quarantine or isolate at home, or if they leave campus because they are asked to leave due to conduct issues, they will not be reimbursed for the remainder of their room and board. However, if the student is asked to leave campus in order to quarantine or isolate at home, their room and board will be adjusted to the prorated amount. See below for the effect on their financial aid.

If a student starts the semester at home because they need to quarantine or isolate, will their room and board be adjusted to cover only the time they are on campus?

A student who arrives on campus partway through the semester will be charged the prorated amount. See below for the effect on their financial aid.

Will students be charged room and board if they choose to study remotely?

If a student selects remote instruction during the fall semester, room and board charges will be removed from the bill. Because institutional aid is determined relative to the cost of attendance, institutional aid will be adjusted downward to reflect the lower cost of attendance associated with studying remotely.

Remote students with any federal, state or institutional need-based funding will have their aid recalculated to reflect the lower cost of attendance in accordance with federal or state regulation and institutional policy.

For remote students receiving institutional aid that is not need-based, the adjustment downward in institutional aid will be 22.2% for most students, which is proportional to the reduction in the comprehensive fee after removing room and board charges. For example, a student whose semester comprehensive fee is $30,840 for tuition, room, board and fees and who receives non-need based aid of $8,000 would normally pay $22,840 ($30,840-8,000) if studying on campus. For remote instruction, he or she would receive a credit of $6,850 for room and board and a reduction of 22.2% or $1,776 in institutional aid. The new payment amount for this student would be $17,776.

The 22.2% factor used for the institutional aid adjustment above is the proportion that room and board makes up of the comprehensive fee ($6,850/30,840 =22.2%).

Will students be charged the activity fee if they choose to study remotely?

The activity fee funds student organizations. Students studying remotely will still be able to participate in student organizations online. But because students studying remotely may receive less benefit from the activities funded by the fee, they will be charged 50% of the normal semester rate. 

If the University is forced to send students home for the semester, will they be refunded a portion of room and board?

Yes. If the University shifts to an online model for all students, it will offer a refund for room and board based on unused room and board days, and an adjustment in institutional aid received by the student using the same formula as noted above for remote instruction. However, if a student leaves voluntarily or is asked to leave because of repeated violations of masking and social distancing policy, there will be no refund.
